These
are the medications that we
have tried for the treatment
of AS.
The side effects that I have
included are only
the ones that my daughter experienced.
Medications have different
effects on different
persons. Please seek
professional advice
concerning medications.
If you would like to search
for the medication
on-line here is a good source.
The first medication wasRitalin.
This medication had no real
effect on the Asperger's.
Of course they were treating
her for ADHD at the time.
The bad side effects she experienced
were.
We then triedDesipramine.
This one worked much better
than Ritalin.
Had the same side affects.
Mary Kay was on Moban for about
4 months.
She had experienced leg pain.
Go
here to read
the story.
She did not experience as much
weight gain with
Moban as she did some of the
other anti psychotics.
The next medication prescribed
by the doctors
at Harding Hospital wasMellaril.
This is a anti psychotic medication.
Mary Kay has a lot of psychosis
with her AS. Please
go
here to read some
of the psychotic features we
experienced.
Psychotic features are not
a diagnostic criteria
for Asperger's. It however,
is present is some
cases. I am by no means
implying to you, the
reader, that you should
look for psychotic symptoms
in your child:-)
Next was Risperdal.
This was by far the worst of
all the medications we
have tried.
Mary
Kay currently takes Wellbutrin.
The Wellbutrin has tremendous
effects
on her school performance and
writing
skills. I was amazed
at her cursive writing
improvements after using wellbutrin.
Mary Kay is no longer
taking Zyprexa.
(Olanzapine)
It caused her to gain a lot
of weight.
The doctor decided to try Risperdal
again. I was very
reluctant to try this because
we have tried it before
7 years ago. She is doing
really well on Risperdal.
I think she was just to young
to have had such a powerful
mediciation before.
I wanted
to address the issue of Secretin used for the
treatment of Autism and AS.
I have yet to hear from any
parents that are using this "wonder drug"
for treatment, and I hear from
a lot of parents!
Below is the link to information
on this medication.
